What are Mala Beads?

Mala beads (sanskrit-mala; Tibetan- ‘phreng bo) are used to count mantra recitations and are worn around the wrist, neck or can even be hung from the waist. They are widely used by Buddhists, but are also used/worn by non-budhists from all walks of life who wish to enrich their life journey through mala practice or simply have an appreciation for these unique beads. We offer a wide array of mala beads to accommodate a variety of preferences, as well as provide comprehensive custom design services.

Mala practice consists of holding a single bead between the index finger and thumb while reciting a mantra--aloud or to yourself--and then moving to the next bead. This process is completed for the entire length of the mala and then repeated while taking care not pass over the guru bead with your fingers. There are many usages for mantras and the mantra will vary from person to person. Some choose to select Sanskrit-based or Tibetan mantras like 'Om Mani Padme Hum’ which is a somewhat all encompassing mantra that aims to purify oneself of negative, afflictive emotions and promotes generosity, patience, diligence, compassion and wisdom. Others prefer to recite mantras which have been given to them by a teacher or they have created on their own. It has also been thought that the mala will hold the karma or energy of the mantra you recite. The more a mantra has been recited while using the mala, the more “powerful” the energy of the mala becomes. Whatever your mantra selection(s) may be, may it bless your existence and be to the benefit of all sentient beings. Mala Materials Material choices for mala beads are quite abundant.

The reasons for selecting a particular mala material over another is a decision dependent on personal choice and practices. Additionally, some believe that specific gemstones, seeds, or metals have particular metaphysical properties. Also, materials such as bodhi seed, lapis lazuli, bone, rudraksha seed, carnelian, red coral and wood are considered traditional. Ultimately we encourage you to select something that speaks to you as mala practice is a intimate spiritual journey. If you are unable to find what you are you searching for, please contact us to discuss design ideas and pricing for a custom mala.
