What are Mala Beads?
Mala beads (sanskrit-mala; Tibetan- ‘phreng bo) are used to count mantra recitations and are worn around the wrist, neck or can even be hung from the waist. They are widely used by Buddhists, but are also used/worn by non-budhists from all walks of life who wish to enrich their life journey through mala practice or simply have an appreciation for these unique beads. Mala practice consists of holding a single bead between the index finger and thumb while reciting a mantra--aloud or to yourself--and then moving to the next bead. This process is completed for the entire length of the mala and then repeated while taking care not pass over the guru bead with your fingers. There are many usages for mantras and the mantra will vary from person to person. Some choose to select Sanskrit-based or Tibetan mantras like 'Om Mani Padme Hum’ which is a somewhat all encompassing mantra that aims to purify oneself of negative, afflictive emotions and promotes generosity, patience, diligence, compassion and wisdom. It has also been thought that the mala will hold the karma or energy of the mantra you recite.
